about

Tom is just starting out in his chosen career of photography. He is a disabled photographer with both physical of verbal disabilities. This doesn't stop his determination in producing images which capture the essence of the subject he's photographing. Tom is based between Sheffield and Nottinghamshire which provides ample inspiration for both his landscape and nature photography. He also enjoys creating unique urban abstract art from the numerous cities around where he lives.  Finally he has recently started a new interest in capturing commercial buildings and commercial events.

Tom has numerous qualifications in photography which include a 1st class BA honours degree. He has read many articles in books and magazines, putting into practice and knowledge he has gained along the way. This has improved his photography style and he is now on the long road to becoming a full-time professional photographer.

Tom's enthusiasm for photography started when he got his first camera at the age of 12, since then Tom has been learning his trade which has been a long and hard process. With Toms disabilities he knows that he has to work that much harder to produce stunning images. He aspires to be produce images which are to a high standard and he's wiling to go that extra mile to do so. This shows in his style of photography.  His use of simple compositions and techniques give great results in his images and makes them stand out. Tom likes challenging himself and believes that he produces his best works when he's under pressure.

questions

Interview with Tom Anthony

Where and when were you born?
Sheffield, south Yorkshire, England on 3rd December 1986.

Why did you choose photography as a career?
I've always enjoyed photography and realised that I could make a career out of it and this year I decided to make the move into professional photography. Before that I didn't really know what I wanted to do, but know I'm totally focused on becoming a photographer. I've have always loved to be my own boss and with my disabilities they made perfect sense. I know its going to be harder for but I'm up for the challenge, I'm that sort of person.

Which photographers have inspired you?
Tony Howell has been my main influence; his style is amazing and something which I aspire to match. I also get inspired by photographs in general whether their by amateurs or professional.  I love to study other people's photographs because they give me inspiration to improve my own photography.

What type of photography do you work in?
I spent my time photographing landscapes, nature, stock and commercial.  These are areas which I enjoy photographing. In the future I would love to shoot weddings but I haven't got the opportunity to shoot one (yet).

What is a typical day for you?
If the weather is what I want then I got out on a shoot, If not then I would work at home.  I would first answer any e-mails which needed to be answered this could take anything from ten minutes to an hour. After this I would process any raw files which I haven't processed yet, I could easily spend a whole day doing this. I then might research places to photograph and get my equipment ready for that shoot, making sure that I only take the equipment that I need. I travel quite a lot either to vendors collecting images etc or to a location for a shoot.  I'm just starting out as a photographer so I don't have that much free time during the week.

Digital vs film?
The thing about digital that I dislike the most is that I spend far too much time on the computer and less time shooting. Film is great but it's becoming less and less used by professional and with everyone wanting work now it makes sense to go digital.  Also you are able to send images without leaving your office which saves time and money. With film dying I feel that digital is that way forward and the advances in sensors means that some cameras can produce images which are sharper than 35mm film.

What if any alterations do you do in Photoshop?
I only do the bare minimum when I'm processing RAW files, things such as contrast, levels and some saturation.  The only Photoshop technique that I might use is digital blending.  This is when you combine two or three exposures to create the image I sore. I also shoot at the lowest ISO which helps with noise which every photographer hates!

With your disabilities do you find it hard to be a photographer?
Yes, with my disabilities they do make it harder because they do restrict me but I'm a very determined person and even with my disabilities I know what I want out of life and I'm wiling to work as hard as I can to achieve this. It just means that it might take me longer to achieve my goals but I'm always up for the challenged.

What advice would you give to beginners?
I would say practice, practice, practice, you can only learn from your mistakes. I would also say that you don't really need to attend a photography course to become a professional photographer.  I would say read as many articles as you can and study other peoples photographs, this is great place to learn from.  I would also say never stick to one type of photography as this can restrict you in the future when your trying to get work, always be open to try new things. You have to be totally focused on your goals and eventually you will get there. Even today I'm still learning which is what I like about photography. Finally never give up!

What are your current and future projects?
At the moment I'm building up a good selection of images which I will be able to use on stock websites and images which I could sell through my website, also to magazines etc.  I'm also at the stage where I'm getting my name out their which is very hard and frustrating at times but hopefully one day it will pay off. I am also concentrating on Sheffield and hopefully in the future I will approach a publisher and maybe they will produce a book on Sheffield. In the long term I hope to continue to produce great images and enjoy what ever I do.
